The Lie of Discipline

Losing 20 pounds. Moving down a clothes size or two. Getting that first pull-up. Making it into the gym 3 or 4 days a week.⠀
·⠀
These are all goals that many of us have and if you’re like me, you’ve probably heard your whole life…⠀
·⠀
“You need DISCIPLINE to be successful and reach your goals! You need to wake up focused 100% on your task at hand and grind. Every day. Do that and you’ll achieve your goals”⠀
·⠀
Wrong. 🤯
·⠀
I’m going to give you some relief and tell you that it’s not really true. The idea that the super successful are super disciplined is false. They are not necessarily any more disciplined than the next person.⠀
·⠀
❓So what is it that makes them successful, if not discipline? And how are we supposed to reach our goals and be successful in what we set out to do?⠀
·⠀
💥The answer is HABITS. We create habits that take the place of discipline. So, what we actually need is just ENOUGH discipline to create the habits that are going to carry us through.⠀
·⠀
From there, we’re on autopilot, in a way. Autopilot toward our goals sounds pretty cool, right?⠀
·⠀
Although the common idea floating around is that it takes 21 days to form a new habit, modern science actually points more toward 60-70 days. That’s okay though! We can do this.⠀
·⠀
All we need is 2-ish months of discipline to heavily ingrain a new habit – laboriously prepping meals in advance, dragging yourself into the gym 3 days each week no matter what, skipping out on the calorie-laden dessert after dinner….⠀
·⠀
🔑Do these things for just long enough and they become habits. And now discipline is out the window! It no longer comes down to willpower or “drive”. It’s just what we do!⠀
·⠀
I’ve got some big habits I’m trying to form this Summer. What are some of yours? Shoot me a message – I’d love to hear them.
