The “Secret” Formula to Long-Term Health

We’ve made it into December, counting down the last days of 2022. Do you ever feel like stress is higher around this time of year?

I’m not sure if it’s the holidays, the cold, the darkness or what, but it just seems like a more stressful time of year.

You know a good way to combat stress? Yeah you do – work out, eat whole, real foods, and get plenty of quality sleep.

We can say it until we’re blue in the face, but the fact remains that sleep, food, and exercise are going to be our most helpful tools in a happy, healthy, fit life.

Sleep – 8 hours of restful sleep should be the target. Wind down the evening with some tea, journaling, reading, etc… and hop in bed. I know it’s not flashy, but this is arguably the most important thing you can do for your health.

Food – As I said above: whole, real foods. Preferably without food labels, right? If it does have a label, you’re looking for a short list of ingredients, and you should definitely be able to pronounce all of them! Also, prepare your meals. If you’re eating out multiple days each week, you are likely taking in foods that aren’t supporting our goals. Cut one meal out, and replace it with a self-prepared meal this week.

Exercise – This is the one that always seems to be overrated. Yes, movement is crucial. But it comes after the above two. Exercise with a poor diet gets us nowhere. Exercise without sleep is counterproductive (sleep is where we reap the rewards from our exercise). Train 2 or 3 days per week. Exercise (walks, etc…) a total of 5 or 6 days per week. This habit will help you feel better almost immediately.

The secret formula for long-term health? It’s the three paragraphs directly above. We’ll call it “S+F+E = LTH”

Seems so simple, right? Almost too simple. We always try to make it more complicated than it has to be. Also, remember, “simple” doesn’t mean “easy.”

Get to bed at a decent time. Eat real food. Exercise a few days a week. Your health and happiness are worth it.
